More Than a Walk: A Year of Recovery, Resilience, and Gratitude

Last Sunday was more than just a community event for our family and our team at NU-YAR Construction. It was deeply personal.

We joined more than a thousand survivors, families, supporters, and advocates at the American Heart Association Heart Walk. Our NU-YAR team proudly showed up with 25 participants walking together in support of heart health, recovery, and awareness.

For us, this walk represented a journey we know all too well.

A Second Chance

This past year has been one of the most emotional and challenging seasons of our lives.

David underwent open-heart surgery to repair his left main artery last May— a life-threatening condition that could have had a very different outcome. We know how incredibly fortunate we are that he is still here with us today.

When something like this happens, your perspective changes instantly. The things that once felt urgent suddenly seem small. Time becomes more meaningful. Health becomes more personal. Gratitude becomes part of everyday life.

Watching David fight through surgery and recovery has been both humbling and inspiring. Recovery is not easy. It requires strength, patience, determination, and support from the people around you.

And through it all, we have been surrounded by an incredible community.

Heart Health Impacts More Families Than We Realize

One of the most meaningful parts of participating in the walk was realizing how many families have their own heart stories.

At the Heart Walk, every person had a reason for being there.

  • Some walked in celebration.

  • Some walked in remembrance.

  • Some walked in support.

  • Some walked because they survived.

Together, it created an atmosphere filled with strength, emotion, and hope.

The Survivor Lane

One of the most emotional moments of the day came at the end of the walk when

David walked through the Survivor lane. This was a special moment honoring those who have battled and survived heart-related medical challenges. At the end, survivors were invited to ring the ceremonial drum.

Watching David beat that drum was something our family and team will never forget. It was more than symbolic. It represented survival, resilience, gratitude, and a second chance. There are moments in life that remind you how fragile and precious life really is. That was one of them.

Our Commitment Moving Forward

This experience has changed us personally and professionally. As a company, we are committed to continuing our support of the American Heart Association and increasing our focus on heart health and wellness for ourselves and our employees.

In construction, we spend so much time focused on projects, schedules, deadlines, and taking care of others that we often neglect our own health. This past year reminded us that nothing matters more than the health of the people behind the work.
